What is cruising altitude for a plane?

According to USA Today, the common cruising altitude for most commercial airplanes is between 33,000 and 42,000 feet, or between about six and nearly eight miles above sea level. Typically, aircraft fly around 35,000 or 36,000 feet in the air.

How far can you see at cruising altitude?

At a cruising altitude of 39,000 feet (12,000 meters; typical for a cross-country flight) the horizon is 391 km (235 miles) away! That's a surprisingly long way; in general that means you could be looking across one or more states in the US.

Can you see a plane at 35000 feet?

The "sweet spot" of flying is regarded as between 35,000 and 42,000 feet (the airline industry still uses feet and inches as its standard measurements) – too high and the oxygen becomes too sparse to fuel the engines, too low and the air resistance is greater.

What is the highest altitude a plane can fly?

Question: What is the highest altitude an airplane can fly? Answer: The highest commercial airliner altitude was 60,000 feet by Concorde. The highest military air-breathing engine airplane was the SR-71 — about 90,000 feet. The highest airliner flying today reaches 45,000 feet.

What happens if a plane flies too high?

When the plane gets too high, there is insufficient oxygen to fuel the engines. "The air is less dense at altitude, so the engine can suck in less and less air per second as it goes higher and at some point the engine can no longer develop sufficient power to climb." ...

Do planes fly over Everest?

According Debapriyo, most commercial airlines avoid flying directly over the Himalayas. This is because "the Himalayas have mountains higher than 20,000 feet, including Mt Everest standing at 29,035 feet. However, most commercial airplanes can fly at 30,000 feet."

Why do jets fly at 35000 feet?

One of the main reasons commercial aeroplanes fly so high is air resistance. Most commercial aeroplanes cruise at an altitude of nearly 35,000 feet in the air! ... Due to lower resistance at higher altitudes, commercial aeroplanes can keep moving forward with minimal fuel expenditure.

Can you breathe 30000 feet?

Above 28,000 to 30,000 feet with extra oxygen under pressure -- normal consciousness and life can be sustained to 50,000 feet. ... Yes, but only 21 percent of plain air at sea level atmospheric pressure is helping to push the oxygen into the patient's lungs (only 21 percent of air is oxygen).

Are planes checked before every flight?

Some people think that before taking off in an airplane the pilot simply has a casual glance at it. Perhaps he kicks the types, checks the fuel gauges to makes sure he has enough fuel, and then just departs. But this is very far from the case. All good pilots use pre-flight checklists before every flight.

Why do planes do not fly over the Pacific?

They never go directly across the Pacific Ocean to get to, say, San Francisco. They take a curved pattern that brings them, if not over Canada, then near it. ... Flights between the U.S. & Australia or New Zealand go directly over the Pacific waters, too.

How high in the sky can you see a plane?

At 10,000 meters (roughly the cruising altitude of a plane), this works out to about 6 meters (or about 20 feet).

Can you hear a plane at 20 000 feet?

Yes, depending on the type of plane, which would determine how loud it is and what the frequency of its sound output was, in normal cruising flight.
